How to Decide Which Marketing Work Comes First

When every task sounds important, choose the next piece of work by business value, evidence, effort and the team’s ability to act.

Answer

A useful priority is a decision record, not a score. It says what value is possible, what evidence supports the diagnosis, how hard the work is and who can act.

Action

Write the ledger with the team, then choose one owned next step and one explicit item to leave for later.

The answer in context

Short sections keep the decision visible and leave room for the limits.

1. Name The Business Result

Start with the action the business needs: qualified enquiries, completed bookings, profitable orders, a shorter sales path or a better view of demand. A channel is not a result by itself.

  • Write the result in one sentence.
  • State who must act and what the team can serve.
  • Choose the period and baseline that will make a change meaningful.

2. Find The Biggest Bottleneck

Trace a real customer from question to action. Is there not enough relevant demand, or is the site, offer, form, checkout, tracking or follow-up losing people after they arrive?

  • Low demand: review audience, offer, search, content or distribution.
  • Poor understanding: review page structure, evidence, message and trust.
  • Poor action: review conversion, form, checkout, speed and next step.
  • Poor learning: review events, definitions, source data and sales feedback.

3. Compare The Next Work

For each possible task, write the likely business value, confidence in the diagnosis, effort to deliver and the owner who can act. Start with work that is valuable, supported by evidence and possible to complete.

4. Measure The Action

Use the source that answers your question. Search Console describes Google Search observations, GA4 records configured key events and ad platforms report their own conversion signals. Reliable sales or operations records are separate evidence of whether an action was useful.

The priority ledger

Compare the evidence, business value, effort and owner in plain language. The example uses these judgements rather than a numerical scoring formula.

5. Say No For Now

A useful priority list includes work you will not do yet. A redesign, a new channel, an AI-search programme or more content can wait when the current offer, page, follow-up or measurement is the larger problem.

  • A redesign when a focused page or tracking fix is the larger problem.
  • A new channel before the offer, conversion path and owner are clear.
  • More content before the team can name the demand or decision it should serve.
  • A promise of rankings, leads, revenue or AI referrals that the evidence cannot support.

Questions about choosing the next marketing task.

Should the loudest problem become the first priority?

Compare it with business value and evidence rather than treating urgency alone as proof of importance.

What makes a useful priority?

A defined problem, useful business value, available evidence, realistic effort and a responsible owner.

How should we compare work with uncertain benefits?

Record the uncertainty and confidence. A small investigation may be more useful than committing to a large implementation.

Can we prioritize by search traffic alone?

Traffic is one signal. Consider whether the work helps a relevant customer action and the business's actual goals.

What if the measurement is unreliable?

Fix or clarify the evidence needed before using it to judge a major change.

Should we do every promising channel?

No. Sequence the work your team can support, and state what you are postponing and why.

How do dependencies affect the order?

Work that enables a later task may need to happen first. Name the dependency and the person responsible.

What if nobody owns a proposed task?

Assign ownership before treating it as a committed priority.

Does a conversion report prove sales increased?

An event, enquiry and completed sale are different records. Keep the business outcome separate from the tracked action.
